25th Year at Glendale’s Historic Alex Theatre

On Thanksgiving Weekend, Saturday November 25th, The Alex Film Society will present the 25th Annual Three Stooges Big Screen Event! in association with C3 Entertainment, Inc. This year, in honor of a quarter century of Stooge-inspired mayhem, our A-1 Deluxe Selection Committee has curated the “Best of The Best” from the many Stooges shorts we’ve screened over the years.

Again this year, the program will be presented from archival 35mm prints, courtesy of Sony Pictures, projected on the big screen at the Alex. Join Moe, Larry, Curly and Shemp and laugh yourself into the Holiday Season with the very best of the most enduring comedy team in motion picture history.

This Year’s Lineup – “The Best of the Best”

Micro-Phonies (1943; Director: Edward Bernds)

Moe, Larry and Curly find themselves impersonating a famous opera singer to help a young woman (Christine McIntyre) pursue her career dreams. This film showcases Moe’s surly leadership, Curly’s engaging physical comedy and Larry’s flawless timing, all while delivering hilarious mistaken identities, misunderstandings and chaos. With Symona Boniface and Gino Corrado.

Men In Black (1934; Director: Raymond McCarey)

“Calling Dr. Howard, Dr, Fine, Dr. Howard!” Moe, Larry, and Curly play bumbling doctors, navigating a chaotic hospital in this Academy Award-nominated short. The trio’s physical humor is on full display as they take apart the medical profession, with the supporting cast, including Bud Jamison, Billy Gilbert and Jeanie Roberts adding to the malpractice and mishaps, all in the name of “Duty and Humanity!”

Punch Drunks (1934; Director: Lou Breslow)

This was the second of 190 Stooges shorts that would be made at Columbia Pictures over the next 23 years.The story was credited to the Stooges and helped cement their relationship with the studio. It features Curly as the the center of attention, when Moe and Larry discover that he turns into an unstoppable boxer when he hears “Pop Goes the Weasel.” With Dorothy Granger and Al Hill contributing to the mayhem.

You Nazty Spy! (1940; Director: Jules White)

This comedy short was a politically daring farce in its day. Moe, Larry, and Curly mock Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime at a time when almost all of Hollywood was reluctant to get involved. “You Nazty Spy!” with its defiant humor delivering a biting commentary on the geopolitical climate of the time, was one of the trio’s personal favorites and is a truly memorable entry in their filmography. With Stooges regulars John Tyrrell, Lorna Gray, Don Beddoe, Richard Fiske and Dick Curtis.

Brideless Groom (1947; Director: Edward Bernds)

Moe, Larry and Shemp embark on a frantic quest to find a bride quickly in order to claim a family inheritance. The signature Stooges’ physical comedy and absurd mishaps are underscored by Shemp’s unique comedic style, aided by Christine McIntyre, Doris Houck, Dee Green and especially Emil Sitka. “Hold hands you love birds!”

Hoi Polloi (1935; Director: Del Lord)

Finally, in “Hoi Polloi,” a turnabout on George Bernard Shaw’s “Pygmalion,” Moe, Larry, and Curly are chosen for a social experiment to transform them from uncultured knuckleheads into gentlemen. This film again showcases Moe’s irascibility, Curly’s physicality, and Larry’s inescapable timing, creating a series of side-splitting situations, pointing out who, in the end, are the real Hoi Polloi. With Geneva Mitchell, Blanche Payson, Phyllis Crane, Harry Holman, Robert Graves, Grace Goodall and Bud Jamison.
