The Three Stooges

26th Year at Glendale’s Historic Alex Theatre

On Thanksgiving Weekend, Saturday November 30th, The Alex Film Society will present the 26th Annual Three Stooges Big Screen Event! in association with C3 Entertainment, Inc. This year, we’ll honor a select group of the filmmakers who guided the comic mayhem you’ve come to love and enjoy: Three Stooges directors Preston Black, Charley Chase, Del Lord and Edward Bernds.  We’ll present representative works from each director, including Preston Black’s Slipper Silks; Charley Chase’s Flat Foot Stooges, Del Lord’s How High Is Up? and Edward Bernds’ Hot Scots, plus two more classic comedy shorts, all once again projected from pristine 35mm prints onto the big screen at the Alex, courtesy of Sony Pictures.  Join Moe, Larry, Curly and Shemp and laugh yourself into the Holiday Season with the most enduring comedy team in motion picture history. Showtimes for this enduring Glendale holiday tradition are 2:00 PM & 8:00 PM.

This Year’s Lineup: “A Directors Tribute”

Slippery Silks (1936; Director: Preston Black)

In this classic Stooges short, the boys are bungling carpentry shop workers who end up being the beneficiaries of their uncle’s fancy gown shop, the “Madame de France.” (Stooge regular Vernon Dent plays Mr. Morgan).

Slippery Silks

Grips, Grunts and Groans (1937; Director: Preston Black)

Three hobo stowaways are chased from a train and end up sparring partners at a gym. Ivan Bustoff, wrestling’s World Champion, takes a shine to the Stooges, so his manager hires them to keep an eye on Bustoff and make sure he doesn’t drink before the big match. (Character actor Harrison Greene plays Bustoff).

Grips, Grunts and Groans

Flat Foot Stooges (1938; Director: Charley Chase)

Firemen Stooges (do you really need to know more?) work at a station that still uses a horse-drawn fire truck. A salesman tries to force a sale to the fire chief by planting gun powder in the Chief’s antique vehicle. (Famous silent comedian Chester Conklin plays Fire Chief Kelly).

Flat Foot Stooges

Goofs and Saddles (1937; Director: Del Lord)

Gen. Muster sends his three best scouts — Buffalo Billious (Curly), Wild Bill Hiccup (Moe) and Just-Plain-Bill (Larry) — to stop the cattle rustlers operating in the area. The Stooges track down Longhorn Pete and, disguised as gamblers, try to find out his plans, until the boys’ covers are exposed. Frequent Stooge short performer Ted Lorch plays Gen. Muster. Lorch also appears in The Hot Scots.

Goofs and Saddles

Hot Scots (1948; Director: Edward Bernds)

Wanna-be Scotland Yard detectives (Shemp, Larry and Moe) get their chance to prove themselves when they find a note calling for three detectives to go to Glenheather Castle in Scotland to solve a mystery. At the castle, mysterious events happen throughout the night. Stooge favorite Christine McIntyre plays Lora Doone.

Hot Scots

How High Is Up? (1940; Director: Del Lord)

Moe, Larry and Curly– three of “the best riveters that ever riveted” – are hired to work on the 97th floor of a building under construction. Surprisingly, they manage to make a mess of things. (Stooge regular Vernon Dent appears again).
