The Night of the Hunter – 10/8/23 Film Events September 10, 2023October 16, 2023 Screening at the Vidiots Eagle Theater, Eagle Rock Sunday, October 8th at 4:00 PM This program was originally scheduled for Thursday, March 19, 2020, approximately one week after the onset of closures due to COVID-19 – and subsequently cancelled. AFS is pleased to announce that we can finally present The Night of the Hunter at the recently-opened Vidiots Eagle Theater. Please Note: We regret to share the news that Alan K. Rode is convalescing from a mishap and will not be available to introduce the film. The 1955 film adaptation of the 1953 novel by Davis Grubb has, over the decades, developed a reputation as one of the greatest thrillers of American cinema, a masterpiece of sinister ambience and a portrayal of one of the all-time great movie villains with Robert Mitchum's turn as the Reverend Harry Powell. It is the 1930s in West Virginia, and Rev. Powell is a traveling preacher who, while in prison, learns of a stash of stolen money and determines to locate it by wooing the wife of the original thief. Photographed in evocative black-and-white by legendary cinematographer Stanley Cortez (The Magnificent Ambersons), director Charles Laughton manages to conjure both an American idyll with his naturalistic exteriors and a tense, threatening atmosphere with his expressionistic and stylized interiors. Also starring Shelley Winters and silent film queen Lillian Gish, and with a marvelous score by Walter Schumann, The Night of the Hunter is an American classic worthy of the silver screen. Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce – 8/26/23 Film Events August 9, 2023August 28, 2023 100 Years of Cinema Under the Stars Joan Crawford in Mildred Pierce on Saturday, August 26 Our Summer series of monthly screenings under the stars in Glendale's Brand Park continues on Saturday, August 26th. What better way to pay tribute to the first 100 years of Warner Bros. than with 1945's Mildred Pierce, which showcases the Jewel City in a starring role. Under the masterful direction of Michael Curtiz, Joan Crawford portrays the long-suffering single mother struggling to raise two daughters, including the 16-year-old, social-climbing Veda (Ann Blyth), who disdains her mother's low station in life. Mildred parlays a knack for baking pies into an eventual chain of restaurants, only to see it, and her family, crumble in the best Hollywood melodramatic fashion. Crawford's first starring role for Warner Bros. earned her the Academy Award as Best Actress in 1946. The series comprises representative films celebrating the first centuries of Warner Bros. and the Walt Disney Company, plus a 100th anniversary presentation of Harold Lloyd's silent comedy classic Safety Last! with live musical accompaniment on September 30th. These outdoor screenings are being presented on the expansive lawn of the historic Doctors' House in Brand Park. Admission is free. Gates will open at 5:30 to allow time for picnicking and socializing before the program begins at 7:00 PM. Please bring blankets, lawn or beach chairs for seating.
