Celebrate the Alex Theatre's 96th Birthday Saturday, September 4, 2021 from 12 PM to 5 PM Glendale Arts, the management entity for Glendale's historic Alex Theatre, is extending an invitation to their Open House at the Alex on Saturday, September 4th from 12pm-5pm to celebrate the 96th birthday of the theatre. The free event coincides with the Alex’s reopening to the public after being temporarily shuttered during the COVID crisis and the launch of its 2021/2022 season. During the self-paced celebration, you'll have the opportunity to roam throughout the historic theater, including the stage area, dressing rooms, and VIP spaces frequented by many top performers over the past 96 years. There will be opportunities to visit the projection booth, step onstage, and see where all the backstage action takes place.  Visit AlexTheatreBirthday.org for more information and to RSVP! Two classic silent comedies will be screened over the course of the afternoon: Ice Cold Cocos at 12:05 PM A Mack Sennett comedy featuring Billy Bevan and Andy Clyde impersonating two ice delivery men. Directed by Del Lord, who also directed many Three Stooges® comedies. The film features the same Los Angeles public stairway used in Laurel & Hardy's The Music Box. Buster's Mix Up at 3:43 PM Just one of the forty-nine films in the Buster Brown comedy series. Pal the Wonder Dog steals the show away from the human performers. Waiting For The Alex To Reopen

Time marches on, and yet movie theatres and performing arts venues - including the Alex Theatre - remain closed in Los Angeles County. Movie theatres in nearby counties are starting to reopen, but often with significant restrictions on seating plans and the size of the audience. This same period has seen a renaissance of drive-in theatres, which are thriving. Our partners at Glendale Arts, the operating entity of the theatre, have been diligently working to develop plans to make patrons feel safe and protected once the appropriate governing bodies allow theatres to reopen. However, there still isn't an estimated date of when that may occur. As previously announced, AFS has canceled most of our remaining 2020 screenings, specifically our annual Halloween show and The Greatest Cartoons Ever! at Christmas. We now have an update regarding our most popular annual event. 23rd Annual The Three Stooges® Big Screen Event! Cancelled for 2020 - We Hope to Be Back in 2021 All summer long we've been hoping that progress would be made toward reopening theatres, and that this iconic event could be held on its scheduled date of Saturday, November 28, 2020. However, with the currrent uncertainty of when venues might re-open, and the extent to which patrons would be ready to return, we've reluctantly decided to Cancel the 2020 edition. We are well aware of the loyal, enthusiastic fan base that this event has attracted, and how it has become an annual Thanksgiving tradition for many of you. March 19th Screening of The Night of the Hunter Canceled Dear Alex Film Society Members and Patrons, In response to Governor Gavin Newsom’s recent mandate that gatherings of over 250 people be postponed or canceled due to the rapidly evolving public health crisis involving COVID-19, all public performances scheduled at Glendale’s Alex Theatre through April 5th have been canceled by the theatre's operating entity, Glendale Arts, including the Alex Film Society’s March 19th screening of The Night of the Hunter. The Alex Film Society was looking forward to presenting this 1955 American classic, projected from a gorgeous 35mm black-and-white print, and we hope to be able to reschedule it for a future program. The well-being of our patrons, members, and volunteers is important to us, so we will continue to monitor this evolving public health issue as we consider our future show dates. Holders of tickets for the show purchased in advance will be contacted by the venue from which the tickets were purchased. We appreciate your continued support of the Alex Film Society and your understanding regarding the decision to cancel this screening.
